NB. The Contractor had serious financial challenges that resulted on liquidation of their company, the
Contractor then abandon the site in April 2012.
The Liquidators then organized Road Mac Surfacing to complete the outstanding works.
The project was then completed in February 2013.
Phase 2

Feasibility studies, Geotechnical investigation, planning, preparing scoping report,
preparing preliminary design report, detailed design, drawings and documentation, tendering and evaluation
report, progress reports, payment certificates, supervision and monitoring until commissioning. Ensuring
compliance with Environmental and OHS.
Project Description
Overview and location of the works – Phase 1
This project comprises the upgrading of Road D481, which starts at the junction with Road D225 (R541)
near Lukwatini and ends at the junction with Road P77/1 (R40) near Bulembu. The road is surfaced up to
Km 27.1 near Nhlaba where the project starts. The length of the road section that falls within the scope of
this contract is 9.6km up to Ngoneni Township. This route will connect the local communities to Badplaas in
the west.
The road under consideration includes one major T-junction, ten minor T-junctions, a new bridge, and
maintenance of two existing bridges, 6 large culverts, and various nominal pre-cast pipe culverts.
Extent of the works – Phase 1
The main work items to be undertaken in terms of the upgrading of the gravel road to surfaced road from
km 27.1 to km 36.4 involve the following:
- Construction of Cape seal, Asphalt and double seal.
- Construction of a C4 stabilised base layer.
- Construction of a C4 stabilised subbase layer.
- Construction of gravel selected layers.
- Construction of a 5/4500mm x 4500mm bridge structure at km 27.540 over the Dalmeinspruit river.
- Routine maintenance on two existing bridges.
Overview and location of the works – Phase 2
This project comprises the upgrading of Road D481, which starts at the junction with Road D225 (R541)
near Lukwatini and ends at the junction with Road P77/1 (R40) near Bulembu. From km 0 up to km 8 the
road is surfaced and is still in good condition, from km 8 to km 27.1 the road was surfaced before and was
not constructed using engineering standards. This section has been deteriorated in such a way that large
sections have been converted back into gravel status. The length of the road section that falls within the
current contract is 12km which starts at km 8 of D481 up to km 20.
The road under consideration includes several minor T-junctions, 3 large culverts, bus bays and various
nominal pre-cast pipe culverts.
Extent of the works – Phase 2
The main work items to be undertaken in terms of the upgrading of the gravel road to surfaced road from
km 8 to km 20 involve the following:
- Construction of Cape seal
- Construction of a C3 stabilised base layer.
- Construction of a C4 stabilised subbase layer.
- Construction of gravel selected layers.
- Construction of 3 new major culverts and several pre-cast pipe culverts.
